Stewart Stone

This poet melody word-rhythms like B.B.King caressing Lucille juxtaposing Shakespeare and soul to the drum of hip-hop for the entire world to hear. An early 80’s baby from Lexington , Kentucky , He credits E.A. Poe, Langston Hughes, Robert Frost, 2pac, and Gil Scott-Heron as major influences.  A self proclaimed product of the disenfranchised, underprivileged, and often misunderstood,  He chose to be a token voice of the unspoken buffaloing fields of thought by storming stages reciting rap and spoken word hoping to raise awareness, create dialogue and increase interest in social welfare. He graduated Berea College with a B.A. in Communication and is currently seeking a Masters in Special Education at Kentucky State University . His work can presently be found in Few and Chosen: Defining Negro League Greatness, and is currently working on compiling new work for performance and future publication.

Street Lights

Through the luminous pale
Ghastly frail shell of
Loose liquid light
I see
Pimps, pedophiles, and pushers
Pissing, peering and
Peddling white Jesus
On crumbling corners of corruption
Craving the fix of cash to drop
Crack rock and reputation
As they
Lean against brick
Lean against the Caddy
Leaning forward toward
sista’s selling
Sushi in alleys to support
their hustle
their kids
And high.

During the day
The block is safe to play
But at night Black zombies
White pigs and street prophets
Lurk voraciously for
Young bloods to drain like land
Leeches on safari
Staggering on sidewalks
Asking for a dollar
Asking for information
Asking if you knew
The road to salvation

And all I want is to chill and be free
Hoop on the courts till sweat saturate my tee

Hang wit the boys making noise in the hood
Discussing our struggles and the
Girls that looked good
But every night near the peak of sundown
Our side of town got thick.

And it made me sick
I’d have to be inside
Before those street lights…clicked!
